EMG (electromyography) and NCV (nerve conduction velocity) are tests that assess diseases affecting the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system in general involves any nerve outside of the brain and spinal cord; such as the nerves in your arms and legs. Your physician will determine if you need to have this test.

EMG refers to the needle electrode examination. This is where a tiny needle is inserted into a muscle. The needle is a recording device, like an antenna, and simply picks up signals from muscle.
NCV refers to a test where a nerve is stimulated with a small shock and the response is recorded.
These tests strongly compliment each other and almost always need to be preformed together to obtain a complete analysis. There are technical and subjective difficulties in performing and interpreting the results, and therefore this testing should only be performed by experienced physicians.
Patient Preparation:
On the day of testing please wash the arm or leg that will be tested. Please DO NOT apply any skin lotion or sunscreen as this can interfere with the test.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask prior to your test.
