Botox is a biologic agent used to treat a variety of Neurologic conditions. It is injected into muscles, to relax overactive muscles. This treatment has been approved by the FDA since the mid 1990’s and is an extremely effective treatment for several conditions. There are two forms of Botulinum Toxin-Botulinim Toxin Type A (“Botox”), and Botulinum Toxin Type B (“Myobloc”). Our doctors have expertise in the use of both of these agents. Our staff will check with your insurance company to ensure that the treatment is covered, and will inform you if there is any out of pocket cost for this treatment.

1) Cervical Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary contractions of neck muscles that results in neck pain, and involuntary head position. Patients complain that they cannot keep their head in a normal position. It may pull to the side, twist, or veer to an abnormal position. Some people refer to this as “torticollis”. Medications may be ineffective in many patients. Botox is the most effective treatment for this illness, and may offer three months or more of relief. Treatments generally have to be done in three or four month intervals to assure continued benefit. The injections are minimally uncomfortable, and are done in our clinic.

2) Hemifacial Spasm/Blepharospasm. Hemifacial Spasm is where the muscles of the face “twitch” involuntarily. Blepharospasm refers to the involuntary twitching of muscles around the eye(s) only. These conditions usually respond to treatment with Botox as well.

3) Spasticity is characterized by tightness in muscles that can result in trouble walking, or using an arm. It can occur as the result of a stroke, multiple sclerosis, a spinal cord injury, or as a result of cerebral palsy. Botox can be a very effective treatment for these disorders that can improve the ability of one to use the effective limb. Treatment may also reduce pain in the affected limb.

4) Sialorrhea (drooling) can occur in individuals with Parkinson’s disease, or at times with other neurologic illnesses. Botox, usually type B (Myobloc) can be a very effective treatment for this disorder.

5) Headaches can be treated at times with Botox. Usually this is a treatment that is considered when other treatments have not been as effective as had been hoped.
